Video Transcript for Review of Bulldog Winch Electric Winch - Recovery Winch - Truck Winch - BDW34FR

Hello everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at this Bulldog Winch Heavy-Duty Series Off-Road Winch, with the synthetic rope, the hawse fairlead and a 16,500 pound capacity. Now, this heavy duty winch will let you recover a stuck vehicle, helps you move boulders and logs or pull a large vehicle onto a trailer. This winch is perfect for firetrucks, ambulances, tow trucks and other work trucks and commercial vehicles. It is designed for winching vehicles with a maximum gross vehicle weight rating of 11,000 pounds.

Now over here on this side uses a 5.6 horsepower series-wound motor, helps deliver powerful and safe line pulling. This motor is more powerful, it's more efficient and produces more torque than a permanent magnet motor. They do also have drain holes that will let water and vapor escape to prevent internal moisture buildup. This does use an automatic ratcheting pawl brake that'll hold a hundred percent of the load. The engaged pawl prevent the drum from spinning in reverse, so a heavy load doesn't unintentionally pay out. Now on top of the motor right up here is this power unit.

This will include the contactor, the plastic housing and the electrical wiring. You can see here is the wiring, even for the battery. It's all included. Now, they do offer a Wiring kit which we do sell separately, that will let you remotely mount this power unit if you don't want it on top of the motor. If you want to put it somewhere else, you can get that Wiring kit that we do sell separately. Now, inside this power unit is a sealed 500 amp contactor.

This will transmit power from the vehicle's battery to the winch motor. This is water and weather resistant to IP67 specifications. Also, if you notice it does come with this rubber handheld remote with a 12 foot lead, that will let you operate the winch from a nice safe distance.Has this weather resistant toggle switch, which will power the load in and out. Just go up or down. Now, this is a wired remote.

If you do want a wireless remote control, we do sell those separately but basically when you go to hook your remote up, you just pop your dust cover off here, take this and just line it up, a little notch that lines up, and once you get it lined up just go ahead and push it on and then twist this to make a good connection. And once it's tightened down, you're all ready to go to operate your winch with your remote. And again, if you're not using your remote, all you need to do is just unscrew that, pop it off, put your cap back on and you're all ready to go.Now, this does use all-steel, 4-stage planetary gear train. The gear box is right over here. The gear ratio is 505:1. It'll provide increased drum speed when compared with worm drives and 1-, 2- or 3-stage planetary gear trains. It does use a free-spooling clutch. The clutch handle is right up at the top here, ensures a nice fast rope payout and will reduce wear on the motor.Basically on this clutch handle, if you'd. Right now it's in the engaged position so you'll operate it with the remote. If you turn it this way, it will be marked disengaged. That means you can free spool it. You can pull out as much rope as you need. And then when you get as much pulled out as you need, just flip it back into the engaged position and operate it with your remote. The other nice feature about this, this gear box here can be rotated 360 degrees so that you can reach this clutch handle no matter where you mount the winch. So if you'd rather have this handle up here, you can just rotate it that way. If you want to back here, rotate it either way. The rope on this is a half diameter HMPE synthetic rope. It's strong as steel, yet lightweight and safer to handle. It's 80 foot long rope and then it has this six feet of woven polyester protector sleeve right here that will protect the rope. If you notice on the end, it does include this 3/8 inch steel clevis hook with the keeper on it and a nice nylon hand saver strap is also included. Now the fairlead which is right up here, that the rope goes through. This is a nice heavy duty CNC machined billet aluminum hawse fairlead. Has rounded corners on it which helps prevent friction damage to the rope when it's pulled all the way to the side, has a nice silver anodized finish on it to resist corrosion. All of this is in a nice heavy duty steel housing with thick side frames and tie bars. They create a nice strong winch body. Has a black powder coat finish on it which is corrosion resistant and they use a dacromet plated motor to help resist internal corrosion.I want to give you a few specs and then some measurements on this. Start with the rated line pool with a single layer of wire rope around the drum, is 16,500 pounds static load. We mentioned the vehicle recovery capacity is 11,000 pounds. A motor on this as a 12 volt DC motor. The line pull at zero pounds. The power draw would be 50 amps, line speed is 18 feet per minute. The line pull at 16,500 pounds. The power draw would be 355 amps and the line speed would be 3.6 feet per minute. In the back here I had showed you the battery leads. The size wire is two gauge wire. The lead length is about six feet. Now the dimensions on the winch itself. The length from this side to this side, we get our tape measure out, this end all the way to this end is about 27 and 3/4 inches long. The height on the unit, it's about 12 and 1/2 inches tall. The width, we spin it around this way, you can see is about 10 and 1/2 wide. And the weight on this winch is about 172 pounds, so it's a pretty heavy winch, very heavy duty winch and that's with the synthetic rope installed.Does come with the hardware you need and a nice set of instructions that'll describe how it operates and how to make all your connections, but that should do it for the review on the Bulldog Winch Heavy-Duty Series Off-Road Winch with the synthetic rope, the hawse fairlead and a 16,500 pound weight capacity..
